Over my many years in business, I've heard hundreds... l repeat...  hundreds of shock horror stories from clients about rouge operators. Believe it or not, the gutter cleaning industry is completely unregulated and unlicensed. Meaning it is crucial to do your due diligence to find a trusted operator. Your roof is the most important asset when it comes to your house, so why would you put an unlicensed contractor up there?

 

Often when speaking with new clients, I hear stories of these operators low ball quoting.. and then doubling.. tripling... quadrupling... the original quoted price on the day of the service, and believe it or not - that's even if they show face. Too often we hear of the "no show", which is when your "lowest quote" contractor goes MIA. Sadly, these are the stories we hear of that have gotten off lightly... too often we hear of serious damage resulting from unqualified tradesmen. You may also be unaware that other companies may also outsource their work. If you book with Mr. Metal, Mr. Metal will be doing your job - not someone you don't know.

As licensed roof plumbers, we are often providing advice and undertaking repair work to clients who went with the "cheapest quote" option, which resulted in subsequent damage. You see... given the lack of regulation... the industry is full of unqualified operators that have no business on your roof. Yet, we continue to hear the stories due to the lack of due diligence into your contractor. 

 

To help you make an informed decision, here are the top 7 things you must know before hiring a gutter cleaning company.​
 

1. License & Insurance: Ensure that the company is licensed and insured. This protects you from liability in case of accidents or damage during the cleaning process. In Victoria, the homeowner is liable for any damage or injuries incurred on the property as they are deemed the "project manager" by Victorian legislation (I bet you hadn't heard of this before..!). In Melbourne, there are only a select few licensed companies, Mr. Metal included. DO. YOUR. RESEARCH.
    

2. Equipment & Safety: Check to see what kind of equipment the company uses. More specifically, the safety harness equipment and processes to ensure there are no accidents at your property. Given homeowners are liable for damage or injuries incurred, it is crucial to ensure the company follows the correct safety procedures - Remember, one slip is all it takes. Mr. Metal does not cut any corners -  we are the only company that sends two staff to job sites, one specifically to monitor the safety of the job.
    

3. Contractors: It's always worth checking with the business you've hired to see if they plan on subcontracting the work to another company. Most companies will tell you they do not subcontract. However, we receive countless requests every week to perform sub-contracting work due to other's lack of knowledge, experience or required safety equipment for the job. Subcontracting is a grey area, and should raises eyebrows when considering the insurance. Custom insurance policies are often required in order to cover events under subcontracting, do your due diligence to ensure you, the homeowner, are protected. Mr. Metal does not subcontract out work, we hire and train our own staff insuring homeowners are covered for their peace of mind.
    

4. Pricing: It's great to get quotes from different companies to make sure you're getting a fair market price. Be wary of companies that offer low prices, they are cutting corners, are using subpar equipment, and are generally not offering you a fixed price. We often hear that Mr. Metal's quote is lower when compared to other companies "miraculously" revise their quote on the day of your service. 
    

5. Guarantees: Make sure the company offers some kind of guarantee. If they don't offer a guarantee, they do not back the quality of their own work or are likely an unprofessional service with a lack of processes. Mr. Metal guarantees a top quality job.
